Hg A1c – Hemoglobin A1c

What is a HgA1c?

A Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a blood test that measures the average level of blood sugar (glucose) over the past 2-3 months.

What does it tell my medical provider?

This test is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes and prediabetes and is helpful in determining overall health.

Why should I get a HgA1c?

HbA1c can help identify people who are at risk of developing diabetes or who have poorly controlled diabetes. High levels of HbA1c indicate poor blood sugar control over the past few months, which can increase the risk of developing complications such as kidney disease, nerve damage, and eye problems.

The HbA1c test can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for diabetes, including lifestyle changes and medications.

In addition to its use in diagnosing and monitoring diabetes, the HbA1c test has also been shown to be a predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. High levels of HbA1c are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke, even in people without diabetes.
